Owl City's lead single for the upcoming second reel entitled "Lucid Dream" is released.
Adam, on "Lucid Dream": "Lucid Dream is about the best flying dream I ever had. When I was writing this album, I kept a dream journal next to my bed and I remember waking up from this incredibly surreal dream. I wrote down everything I could remember and that writing later became the lyrics to the song. I wrote this song because I wanted to round out this album that's full of personal, very literal songs, with more of an abstract, conceptual song, because that's always been a huge part of what I do. I love music that suggests to the listener how to feel rather than spell it out for them. When you listen to Lucid Dream, I hope it makes you want to close your eyes after a long day, drift off, and let your imagination carry you away."

Adam, on "New York City": "New York City is a song about the first time I ever really left my hometown and went on a trip and I saw some of the world. I wanted to remember some of the small details that I'm realizing, the older I get, the more I'm starting to forget. So I was 18 years old. We took my piece-of-junk first car (the driver side door didn't lock), we ate junk food 24/7, we showered at truck stops, I got to see the ocean for the first time on this trip. It was a very coming-of-age story for me. When you listen to New York City, I hope you feel inspired to pack your stuff, jump in the car, take a trip, see the world, maybe get lost from time to time, because I think if you do that, you'll be glad you did."

Owl City's sixth studio album, entitled Cinematic, is released. Unlike previous Owl City records released before, this album focuses more on Adam's personal life rather than ideas from his imagination, which usually inspired him. The album has a total of 18 songs, including three alternative versions of already recorded ones.
Adam, on Cinematic: "In many ways, this album is an autobiography. As a songwriter, my creative instinct has always been to write songs about abstract imagery, strange daydreams and streams of consciousness. Cinematic is my endeavor to write music about my personal life story. Each song on this album is 100% literal, meaning each is based upon a true experience I've had, an actual place I've visited, or a real person I've known. I created Cinematic to both acknowledge my past and to honor the people I love. As I began writing these deeply personal songs, it felt like I was watching 'scenes' from my life the same way I would watch scenes from a movie. I felt inspired to better understand and appreciate the magic moments that occur throughout my lifetime, because I believe those moments are worth celebrating. I hope this album leaves you with the idea that your life is like a movie and you are the star. You're going to run into critics, but you have an audience cheering you on. The stage is yours, so get out there, and do your best, and remember to have fun. Cinematic, in short, means this: your life is yours to live, so live it well. Break a leg, Adam"
To celebrate the release of the new album, Adam answers fan questions on Twitter and Reddit.
Along with the release of the album, Adam writes a message to fans on social media.
Adam: "At long last, Cinematic, in its entirety, is available everywhere. I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to this body of work as much as I enjoyed creating it. The message I want to communicate with the release of Cinematic is simple: don't stop believing in magic, even if everyone else does. Keep learning to see the beauty around you and embrace the ups and downs. I wrote this album because I believe those ups are worth celebrating. Thank you for allowing me to do what I love. I look forward to making Owl City albums for the rest of my life."
